Winding to a CloseThursday, June 3, 2004The Timberwolves' Best Season Ever
Whenever a Timberwolves season winds to a close, I get sad. Usually, I'm left with a feeling of "Damn! That's it?" The playoffs come and then, boom -- our season's over. But not this year... No no no. Not this year. This year, we had a tremendous season. Western Conference Finals? I'll take it. That's a good step in the right direction. Did it end too soon? Would the results have been the same if we'd had Sammy or T-Hud playing? Likely. With either of them, we could have really stuck it to the Lakers. Could have beaten the crap out of 'em. Woulda coulda shoulda. Oh, well. Still -- this is easily our best season ever. And we're frontrunners to win it all next year. I like that.
My most memorable Timberwolves moment of all time happened this season. Hell the top 5 probably did. But let's talk about my top moment. Game seven against the Sacramento Kings in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. The euphoria that swept through the Target Center once everyone realized that we'd won. End of Series. The crowd roared. Looking around, people everywhere were hugging, high fiving. The place was ecstatic. Such a massive wave of positive energy. We won! We're going to the Western Conference Finals! Strangers were hugging strangers. All because the Timberwolves took another step... It was great... Normally after the games, everyone rushes for the exits -- gotta beat traffic! But not this time. Not this game. This time everyone stuck around and cheered. It was incredible. Best thing ever. Postgame, KG had an interview with TNT. After, his attention finally back on the crowd, everyone in the arena started chanting "M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!" -- it was deafening -- then KG hopped up on the scorer's table and gave love back to the crowd. It was a beautiful moment. Up there in the top 5. Said KG: "I've had some really, really special moments on my birthday, and I've had some real special presents on my birthday. But nothing like this." I think KG jumping on the table like that was a tribute to his great friend, Malik Sealy, on the anniversary of Malik's death. See, Malik had done pretty much the exact same thing after a huge win against Indiana a few years ago. It was a huge win, and he hit the winning jumpshot... and jumped up onto the scorer's table and celebrated. I don't think anybody else picked up on that. But that's kind of how I read the situation. After the game, the streets were just packed with people. Yelling, screaming, honking horns, clapping, cheering on the victory and the progress made. So great. So much positive energy. It was electric. And just to be there, in the midst of all that... It was a very special night. Oh, by the way -- during the game, I even started a "Defense" chant at one point. Hee. That was pretty cool. Vacation
I haaaaate it when vacations end. Needless to say, when a vacation finally winds to a close -- when I have to report back into work -- I may get a little, shall we say... sad? Yes. A little sad.
If you couldn't tell, Lins and I just had a mini-vacation. Did we go somewhere ultra-sexy? Ultra-swank? Well, yes and yes! But no. We didn't atually go anywhere! That's the brilliance of this plan. See, Memorial Day was Monday, and Lins and I brilliantly took off Tuesday and Wednesday, too. We ended up having a great, relaxing little 5 day break from work. We stayed around the house, mostly, took in a movie (Mean Girls), watched a few others via TiVo, played us some videogames. You know, stuff like that. Yes, we're mature adults! Even though the weather was mostly crappy (it rained everyday except Wednesday -- for real!), and we mostly didn't do too much -- it was great. Man... I can't wait til we're retired. Hee. Well now! Check out this story... winding... to a close. *wincing* Thanks for reading! *e |
